Our Oxford readers' retreat, from June 7th to 10th, 2024, was a vibrant tapestry woven from literary enthusiasm, historical exploration, and the joyous celebration of Oxford Pride. Ten of us, a diverse group united by our love of books, convened at the Premier Inn Oxford (Westgate), eager to immerse ourselves in the city's academic and cultural richness.
The Premier Inn provided a comfortable and convenient hub for our group, and each morning, we gathered for a hearty breakfast, setting the stage for days filled with literary exploration and shared experiences. Oxford, a city steeped in history and academic tradition, offered a wealth of opportunities for our group.
Our days were a delightful blend of individual exploration and collective enjoyment. Some of us spent hours browsing the hallowed shelves of Blackwell's, a literary landmark in its own right, while others wandered the historic streets, soaking in the city's atmosphere. A popular group activity was the hop-on-hop-off bus tour, providing us with a comprehensive overview of Oxford’s iconic landmarks and hidden gems.
Lunchtime became a cherished ritual, as we congregated at the Waterstones Café. Over sandwiches and steaming cups of tea, we engaged in lively discussions, sharing our thoughts on beloved authors, dissecting intricate plotlines, and recommending our latest literary discoveries. These were moments of pure literary delight, where our shared passion created an infectious energy.
Evenings provided a relaxed atmosphere for further connection. We dined at a combination of Weatherspoon’s, providing great value and a relaxed atmosphere, and the hotel restaurant, allowing us to unwind after a busy day of exploring.
Adding a vibrant layer to our retreat was the coinciding Oxford Pride celebration. The city was alive with color, music, and a palpable sense of community. The atmosphere was inclusive and joyous, and we found ourselves swept up in the festivities, experiencing the city's diverse and welcoming spirit. It was a wonderful and un-expected addition to our bookish weekend.
Our Oxford retreat was a testament to the power of books to forge connections and create shared experiences. We left Oxford with not only a deeper appreciation for the city's literary heritage but also with cherished memories of laughter, lively discussions, and the vibrant spirit of Oxford Pride. It was a weekend that nourished both our minds and our souls.
